South Africa Trip: Thursday- Saturday

Thursday- Saturday

Lots of travelling and napping including a 5 hour bus journey surrounded by precariously stacked suitcases (no one was injured although it was a little tense at times).

Left the house at 11pm to get to Dublin (shoutout to mum and dad for driving us to Belfast for the 1am bus to Dublin airport). The flight was long. Dublin to Amsterdam, then on to Capetown.

Over 13 hours on a plane

6 hours in airports

And 9 hours on the road

Safe to say we were happy to arrive at our accommodation at 4:30am on Saturday morning!!

Saturday

After a 3 hour sleep we were up to a “traditional” South African breakfast of cereal, yogurt, fruit, eggs, pap (like really soggy rice) and beef sausages.

We then headed out to see the townships where the pupils of the sports academy live: Thembalethu and Lawaaikamp.

It’s a bit like home- Themba is full of blacks and they don’t get on with the lighter skinned “coloured” people from Lawaai.

This is why the sports Academy in George is so incredible. They are trying to break down the barriers between these communities through sport.

After picking the senior met-ball girls up as well as some of the footballers, we went to a strawberry farm and maze and got to know the kids by getting lost in a maze together.

We then went to the youth club run by the academy and took charge of some games and an epilogue.

The evening was spent playing board games, having some traditional South African BBQ food (meat!)

And an early night

Weather report:

Sunny with cloudy intervals. Top temperature 18*C
